The Opéra Garnier, also known as Palais Garnier, is an opera house in Paris. It is located in the 9th arrondissement, at 15 minutes walk from the Hotel Migny. It is one of the most striking buildings of the French capital.
The Opéra Garnier was designed by Charles Garnier in 1861 on behalf of Napoleon III. The building was opened in 1871, but due to the Franco-German War, the opening was postponed to January 5, 1875. The interior is rich in gold leaf, frescoes and marble.
It is the largest opera house in the world with an area of over 11,000 m². The building measures 125 meters wide, 173 meters long and 73.6 meters high. The opera houses 2131 spectators and the stage, of about 1200 m², can contain 450 artists. The hanging chandelier in the center weighs 6 tons and was designed by Garnier himself. The lush interior has a large entrance hall, a staircase of various kinds of marble, a vaulted vault by Isidore Pils and a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964 with a sort of olympus that he showed the honor to 14 composers of ballet and music with their respective works.
In the opera, ballet shows are mainly organized today.
