In 1859, the painter Edgar Degas set up his studio at No. 13 rue de Laval (today's rue Victor Massé — the very address of the Hôtel Migny), a few years before Impressionism was born. It was during this period that he painted, in 1872, Dance Class at the Opera, now held at the Musée d'Orsay.
